Pointed Versus Blunt Tip Probes

As far as the performance of a bimetal thermometer, there is no difference between a pointed tip and a blunt tip. It really comes down to the customer's application and/or preference. We recommend using the tip shape that is "standard" for the thermometer in question, as this would usually be the least expensive option, unless the application calls for something different.

The main reason to choose a pointed tip would be a need to penetrate a substance such as meat, compost, etc. Blunt tips wouldn't penetrate as easily, especially with larger diameter thermometers.

The main reason to choose a blunt tip might be personal safety, particularly if the thermometer is installed somewhere where a person may need to reach past the end of the stem for something. For example, if the thermometer is installed inside a grill lid and a person needs to reach past it to flip a steak, they would not want to catch the back of their hand on a pointed stem.
